DA1 Adventures in Blackmoor

Post by Havard » Thu Apr 21, 2016 7:43 pm

This module is now available in PDF format!.

Here's a discussion of the module at The Comeback Inn.

Personally I think it is one of the best Blackmoor products ever written and a great introduction to the setting that is so closely tied to the origins of our hobby itself.

What do you think of this module? If you dont own it yet, now is your chance! :)

I like it so much, I've based several years worth of fiction off of it ;)

And I am using it right now in the current act of a certain play by post, where it serves as the "quarantine sector" of the deepest core of the Progeny's Thoughtshare network.

Which is currently under threat from one or more Aether-shadowed demonic entities hijacking the King's Companons' Thoughtshare reflections. Guess who the heroes have to face off against to escape the quarantine? :D

Thanks. I've updated the DA1 Adventures in Blackmoor page on the Book-House on The Piazza. (Do you know of any fanon resources for DA1 that are missing from that page?)

Personally, I'd rather have a dead-tree copy of a book (if it is something I want).

DA1 is a bit pricey on Amazon. Is there anything specific it has, that isn't in the 3e product line?

Thanks! I will see if I can dig out some more resources for it. :)

I am very happy to have my print copy of this legendary module, but as these are getting more and more difficult to obtain, I am happy that the module is at least available for those missing it for their collection. I am also starting to appreciate having both print and pdf versions of the modules I consult the most frequently. DA1 is a module I keep coming back to.

Great question!

Here's a quick run-down:
  • First of all the adventure involving the kidnapping of King Uther was never revisited in the 3e line.
  • Several NPCs, including some based on Dave's original campaign were never revisited.
  • Detailed description and floor plans for the Comeback Inn
  • Massive history/geography section. Much of this was rehashed in later versions, but there are tons of additional snippets that were not mentioned later.
  • Details on the centuries following the reign of Uther (ie the /possible/ future of Blackmoor).
  • The storyline involving time travel from Mystara's Darokin and Brokenlands and the Inn Between the Worlds to Blackmoor. This last part is probably mainly of interest for Mystara fans, though there are many ways to adapt this to other settings as well.

The pdf has a very accessible price (even for me, who lives in a country in which dollars are very expensive). I guess I'm going to buy it next week, as I'm beginning to become interest in Blackmoor in the last days.

Though, OD&D right? For a Lazy DM like me converting to 4e will be bothersome...

OD&D is a problematic term, but it usually refers only to the 1974 version of D&D. DA1 is written for the 1983+ version often called BECMI, though it can easily be used for earlier versions too as they are highly compatible.

Since you are a 4E fan, I would start with that book, but if the 4E stuff isn't enough I definitely recommend getting the DA modules.

Actually converting modules doesnt have to be that hard. I would just replace monsters with appropriate monsters from the edition you are using.
