Blackmoor Living World on RPoL

Post by Yaztromo » Sat Dec 09, 2017 5:14 pm

In case you are interested, I am running this campaign on RPoL (i.e. Role Play on Line) http://www.rpol.net/game.cgi?gi=70496&date=1512838697

It is a campaign in the classic fantasy setting of Blackmoor (starting from Zeitgeist take on it), run with AFF2 (an easy quickstart d6 ruleset, with a public domain quickstart guide) and made of a number of one-off adventures that can be played in different order. Some adventure can be run more than once for different groups and more than one adventure can be running at the same time for different groups.
As a player, you will join the game, then you can create your characters and join the specific adventures as you like.

Check it out!

PS I know that RPoL at first sight may look weird under graphic and interface point of view, but usually after a short time people learn how to customize it for personal needs (in practice, remove everything that you don't need) and everything falls in its place.

Considering how it was evolving, I renamed this campaign Blackmoor Living World.
Check it out! :)

I'm about to re-run The ComeBack Inn, a short adventure that is the perfect introduction to Blackmoor for novices and that can be periodically re-run with no problem for the wider campaign.
If you are interested on having a quick experience in Blackmoor, this could be your opportunity!

So far so good.
In general there is interest in Blackmoor, even if I run it with a different ruleset than what people normally expect. In one and half years we completed 12 adventures and 4 more are ongoing right now. This couldn't happen without the players' interest.

Hrmm, maybe I should join. At least it isn't likely to fold like 90% of the other games on there...

Where did you get the 90% figure?

In my humble experience, as a player you need to learn how to pick your games by checking out how many games the DM is running, for how long they have been running and what is the rate of posting (all information that can be deducted openly with site equiries) and as a DM you need to learn how to pick your players as well, although it is more difficult... once you understand how to sort that out, things get pretty steady. There are literally hundreds of games on RPoL (and other platforms, of course) that have been steadily and satisfactorily progressing for 10 years or more.

It was an arbitrary percentage selected to complain about how many bad players (and some DMs) there are compared to the good ones. I am not saying there aren't good ones, but certainly a majority of the games seem to die of attrition.... But that doesn't deter me from continuing to play!

When I started playing on line I had the same impression (for quite some time)... then I realised that you need to take the right information about the GM before entering new games. On RPoL you can check many things about the games and the GMs, such as how many games they are running, how many posts in each game, for how long (approximately) the games have been running, when was added last post of a geme, ecc. This gives you a lot of useful insight.
Then you will see that good, reliable GMs have often a base of good, reliable players, so, even if you start a new game just opened by a reliable GM, chances are that some of the players that join that game come from some other campaign of that GM, creating a more reliable players group, with less attrition risks.
It takes a bit of experience to get up to speed with this kind of "background checks".

Thanks! I will keep this in mind going forward. In the interim, I will apply to your game after work tonight. Too much to read while at work :)
