What world do you connect Blackmoor to?

Post by Falconer » Thu Nov 04, 2010 8:58 pm

Sorry if this has been done before! I was just curious how everyone handles the world outside Blackmoor and “The North”! Sorry if I missed any obvious options.

For me Blackmoor will be used during the height of Blackmoor in it`s own sphere.

Excellent! I am using Mystara as a framework and incoroporate the Wilderlands with some tweaks. I am considering borrowing elements from Greyhawk and Aquaria, but didnt include those in my vote as that is still work in progress.

I'm using Blackmoor more or less as canon dictates for the Mystara's past, with a few tweaks. However, it also exists in the present day of Thorn's Mystara. :x

Middle-earth: This connection is suggested to me by the fact that Marfeldt the Barbarian is said to have adventured in the land of Rhûn in the far east, not to mention the existence of Balrogs, Hobbits, Isengard Orcs, etc. For Arneson these would not have been merely standard D&D elements, since D&D did not yet exist. The “Great Kingdom” that Blackmoor is traditionally a part of, then, would be the Reunited Kingdom of Arnor and Gondor of the Fourth Age (or, perhaps better yet, the original Arnor + Gondor of the Second Age and early Third Age), with Blackmoor and environs obviously set in the far north of Arnor. I have long thought that doing a Middle-earth campaign that was set in lands off the main LotR map would be the way to go. That way, creatures and races with Middle-earth origins and histories could retain all their richness, but you wouldn’t be locked into canon since you are dealing with other places with their own magic and their own archenemies.

Star Trek: This connection is suggested by the Federation Starship Beagle and all the “weird science as magic” elements of Blackmoor, for example, magic wands as hand phasers. Though this could be just a reference to generic sci-fi, I always assumed it was Star Trek in particular that Dave and all his players had in mind and had in common. Many episodes of TOS featured a planet with medieval themes and “magic” fueled by a very advanced species and/or supercomputers.

World of Greyhawk: As we know from the OD&D introduction, “From the map of the ‘land’ of the ‘Great Kingdom’ and environs — the territory of C & C Society — Dave located a nice bog wherein to nest the weird enclave of ‘Blackmoor,’ a spot between the ‘Giant Kingdom’ and the fearsome ‘Egg of Coot.’” Of course, the “Castle & Crusade Society Great Kingdom of King Robert I” was eventually published, as developed by Gygax, under the title The World of Greyhawk. Now, this world was obviously developed without direct input from Arneson, but obviously from Gygax’s perspective it was a continuation of the same world. Hence, it still included Blackmoor and the City of the Gods—locales visited by Mordenkainen and Robilar in days gone by. In my past campaign, I have used WoG (set at a time period when the GK was at its height) to represent the “outside world” of Blackmoor, even if the players seldom went beyond the borders of “The North”. I thought its gods, calendar and moons to be a good fit. I found it useful to be able to refer to Rauxes and Greyhawk as places in the world outside that people could be from or going to, rather than just leave it completely vague.

Mystara and Wilderlands: Each has a very explicit fit with Blackmoor, of course, and each has its coolness. Since these are obvious, no need to comment.

What an interesting observation! I never really put these pieces together but you may just be on to something here.

The Star Trek connection goes at least back to 1973 and Stephen Rocheford:

OTOH, the original campaign was also connected to John Snider's Star Empires/Star Probe Universe which provides an alternate sci fi universe.

I cast raise dead!!

I use Blackmoor as its own thing, though I do like the fact that it can be connected to other worlds.

While I will be using Mystara to develop the back-story of my campaign, I would make my Blackmoor an independent world. I like to deviate a bit from the established canon. :P

I suggested a Warhammer 40,000 connection in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=54&t=18011

Fundamentally, I think of Blackmoor as its own world, but I also voted for the Wilderlands connection because the FFC was redone by JG to fit there as well.

Thanks for bumping this. I missed this when it was originally posted.

I voted for Blackmoor being it's own world...

...but I must admit that I'd be tempted to surround that world with a Spelljammer crystal sphere! :P
