What AD&D book included this Elmore Painting?

Post by Havard »

In this thread, we are talking about a painting by Larry Elmore, later used in his Sovereign Stone setting. I think this painting is titled "Shademehr encounters Baakesh Va" and it is the one that can be viewed here: http://fantasy.mrugala.net/Larry%20Elmo ... ounter.jpg

I am pretty sure that this painting was included in the interior of an AD&D book. I am thinking the DMG or maybe one of the Monstrous Compendiums?

Any of you AD&D experts who can confirm this? :)

I don't think I've ever seen that piece of art before. If it is from an AD&D book, it is not one I'm familiar with. You sure it is a TSR/early WotC commission? The monster doesn't seem to be an AD&D monster.

Hmmm. Perhaps I was wrong then?

The monster in the painting is a Baak from the Sovereign Stone setting, but I could have sworn that this painting predated the published version of Sovereign Stone.

I've seen it on Elmore's site but I can't place the product it would have originated from. If anywhere, I would think Dragonlance.

It doesn't look familiar to me, either. I guess it could be in some obscure book that I don't own, like The Complete Book of Paladins. Usually 2e's color plates recycled art from Dragon Magazine or module or novel covers, though, except in prestige lines like Planescape and Birthright.
