Hi Mr Heard,

Speaking of goats...
You once mentioned in Dragon Magazine 189's Known World Grimoire there was a village name in Mystara that translated to Goat Dropping.

Perhaps it would be ok now to tell us which one? and in which language? It was in Jan 1993 so it's understandable if the memory of it has faded.

Yes, I remember the part about Goat Droppings. (Some memories do stick... oddly enough). I think it was one of the places on the Savage Coast, near Slagovich. Btw, thanks for the YouTube video. Very funny!

I just took all the names from the Gulf of Hule and ran them through every language that Google Translate has, so you must have used an obscure language.
At least one interesting coincidence(?), Hule means Blasphemy in Romanian. And better yet, it's a Hagiarchy, ruled by holy-men (although maybe blasphemous ones).

Hi, Bruce-

A question that I've wondered about for some time: In the Mystara Reference Guide you posted to the MML some years ago (an overview of the product line and its future, some speculative), the timeline for the Wrath of the Immortals plays out over a longer period- 1000 to 1010- whereas the actual published product that came out later condensed the timeline to 1004 to 1010. Was there a specific reason for this? (I'd assume to allow current campaigns to play out and not interfere too much, but that's just my guess.)

I always felt that the longer period seemed a bit better, frankly, and that the WotI shortened timeframe moved things along too fast.

Anyway, just curious. Always wished we'd seen some of the other products in that line (although you did put a lot of information on the Heldannic Knights out for us over the years which was great, and Champions of Mystara- while not wholly Sind-centric like Winds of Sind- does contain a lot of information. Crown of Synn and other products in the Princess Ark line would have been great, though.)

Special Mission: This isn't related to Mystara, but I thought I'd drop this query here to the attention of Londoners. I'm doing some research on Cairo (bet you know why) during the time of the Great War. I consulted the National Archives at Kew Gardens just outside London. I found what I was looking for but unfortunately, because of the format of the document, archive services cannot make a copy and mail it to me. I was wondering if anyone in London would be interested in helping me out. If you're willing, send me a private mail so we can talk about it. Thanks!

I think there's at least 3-4 very active members here that are London UK based.. but I'm not one of them, so I have another question :D

How did you calculate a country's area?
Counting hexes (8 mile hex = 56 sq m) doesn't match to the areas given.

One of the things I love most about Mystara is that all this type of crunch information was available.
Most other TSR campaign settings at that time did not provide areas, some didn't have national populations, a couple didn't even give city populations..
Basic D&D was more Advanced than AD&D in such areas :)

Our illustrated... er... illustrious leader (Ashtagon, aka Emma Rome) lives in London.

Big Mac isn't far from there.

Maybe if you drop a PM on them...

Hi Morfie

Can you give some examples of erroneously calculated areas?

This from a previous post of mine:

Ulimwengu on the Serpent Peninsula map clearly has 14 x 24 mile hexes.
But Champions of Mystara states Ulimwengu has an area of 9,000 sq miles. Almanacs have 8,800.

By counting hexes the area should be 6,972 sq miles.

This is with 24 mile hex being 498 sq miles. There wasn't an 8 mile hex map published for this area.
I had started with Ulimwengu as this was landlocked. I wasn't sure if coastal areas had included the sea or not.

If they were hex counted for area, I'm guessing the lower the scale the map the more accurate the area count? ie: 8 mile hex preferred over 24 mile hex.

@Morfie -- there could be any number of reasons why errors like these crop up. I'm guessing the designers worked on a map which got altered during production, thereby causing a discrepancy. That's one explanation. There could have been different methods used to assess areas (count the hexes at various scales, or even multiply distance Y by distance X, etc). Just correct the number according to your best guess if you find an error. I'm sure you'll find plenty if you look closely. The best way I found to calculate areas is for small regions, using an 8-mile hex scale. For large areas, it's never going to be absolutely correct.

Neat! The Great Veil makes the Haze's anti-divination even worse. It's probably the only place on Mystara where charlatan fortune tellers can't be upstaged by true wizards.

Thanks! It's nice to see a full-fledged writeup for the Goatmen.

As an early feedback, I'd suggest to allow the option of using the BECMI Thief class to Goatlings, and the same range of classes as AD&D for BECMI Caprines (or at least the Thief).

A question raises about Bielgorna and Orcus: are they one and the same, or two different demons? The description of Bielgorna does remind Orcus, and their history could be made fit together (especially since Orcus is a relatively young Immortal in Mystara, and the AD&D history of his death and return make it tempting to have Bielgorna as the old identity of Orcus).

Excellent Bruce! I have just had time for a quick read through, but as I wrote on your blog, I really like what I am seeing so far. The full article is much more comprehensive than I first thought. I remember reading some older drafts for some of the Goat Men concepts on Pandius, but I love seeing this material expanded into a full article. :)

Read through the blog intro yesterday. Good stuff! I'll probably take a look at the rest of it after I get through the ideas crowded in the ol' noggin. But I liked what I saw so far!

Do you have to be a member of Bruce's blog to view the full article? The link from his website to the main article only leads to a generic google webpage with no articles on it.
