Kara-Tur in Dragon & Dungeon

Post by Dragonhelm » Sat Oct 01, 2011 9:34 pm

The table of contents for the October DDI magazines are up, here (Dragon 404) and here (Dungeon 195). This month is a Kara-Tur theme.

Lots of good stuff here, including samurai, sohei, ninjas, hengeyokai, and more!

Excellent news! Thanks Dragonhelm, I'll actually consider picking these up to go with my 'Oriental Adventures'.

Has there been any further news on DL content in Dragon or Dungeon?

Good news indeed! I hope this is a sign that they are becoming more interested in bringing back older concepts...

As of this time, no. But, it may be that I'll need to take a weekend to work up some proposals. ;)

From what I have read, that does indeed seem to be the case. For example, it sounds like they might bring back Al-Qadim after the Elemental Heroes Handbook comes out this spring.

Yes indeed. :)

The gist is that more niche settings will get the Dragon/Dungeon treatment. So things like Kara-Tur and Al-Qadim fit that bill nicely.

For me, I'm excited, 'cause I find that I'm more interested in a setting if given a more modern presentation. So while Kara-Tur (to keep this somewhat on topic) was something I had a mild interest in, I may very well be more into it these days.

That (without logging in) answers my question on what time period this Kara-Tur stuff is.

Xiousing seems to be more like a Shou colony on new land formed in/near Faerun than Kara-Tur proper. Maybe that is a way to get past the gap of the Hordelands and make a Kara-Tur Campaign Guide that butts right up against Faerun and has a secondary role as a Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide expansion.

I haven't read more than just the free blurbs about each article. Is there any hint as to how the Spellplague has affected KT?

Same here, to be honest. I've still got 3e and 2e sources I'm trying to track down. I can't really afford the time to get involved with 4e at the moment (let alone the money).

Nentir Vale is probably the part of 4e that is most likely to get me to dip a toe into the edition.

Unfortunately, I've been so busy that I haven't had much of a chance to read these articles. Grrr...

I've not seen anything yet, but will let you know if I do.

Have you had time to read them yet? (Having a DDI subscription and not actually reading stuff sounds like bad value for money. But then I've bought a lot of books I've not yet read.)

For anyone who has read this, this DDI article was also mentioned up in my thread called What did the Spellplague do to the Horde area? in the forum for The Horde. I would be interested in any input from DDI subscribers.

Trampas also has a thread called Hordelands Nomad Character Theme in the forum for The Horde.

Unfortunately, that happens to me a lot. My value comes from what I can read and from Character Builder and other tools.

These articles are on my to-read list.

Maybe if I didn't have to work on a Sunday, I could read more. :(

Just noticed you mentioning that Elemental Heroes could support the return of Al-Qadim. I don't really follow the 4e books. Is anything in the pipeline that could indicate that a full blown Kara-Tur Campaign Guide could become a reality?

No, there's no Kara-Tur sourcebook in the works.

Truthfully, I wouldn't expect there to be. Kara-Tur is pretty niche as it is. I think keeping those niche settings in Dragon/Dungeon is perfect, allowing the settings to have continued life while not causing any undue financial strain on WotC.
