[K'aacea] Monsters, Creatures, and Fey

Post by cptmorgan »

Drawing from mesoamerican and caribbean culture.

Tata Duende
Powerful and tricksy fey.
https://imgur.com/sgmKmuW

The Green Duende
An excellent familiar option for druids
https://imgur.com/chDfkA2

Duende
Found in towns and crossroads. Be careful how you treat those underneath you.
https://imgur.com/6FN8irH

Chickcharnee.
An excellent creature. I usually use it to as a first encounter to set the mood. It's both a serious curse but adds levity.
https://imgur.com/a3T3vgk

Another one from Hild
The Corollax.
Adds some vivid color to a tropical setting.
https://imgur.com/LWODCQ1

The Nagual is a common folktale in the Caribbean
https://imgur.com/pe5dwtz

I like the idea of a Chaneque just being lonely, and not knowing how to approach the larger humans.
https://imgur.com/IyLxf5k

The Couatl Hunter.
Dangerous singleminded slayer of couatls. Quest to protect a polymorphed couatl from this archer.
https://imgur.com/W9n1L0Q

Another familiar. Might be too strong. Mexican folktale.
The carbuncle. Basically a floating lucky charm.

I'm writing a quest where the queztalduan kill an ancient black dragon, and every treasure hunter (including PCs with their ship) is in a race to find its no unguarded treasure hoard. It's a fun visualization of a massive black beast swatting at two dozen little gnats as the quezalduan slowly whittle it down from range.

Gorgos the Trireme.
I've been coming up with legendary captains. This one is a fire based minotaur.

I think it is so incredibly cool that you are referencing and building on Maztica Alive work that its not even funny. If you need anything at all, please feel free to PM me. I am currently working on updating the Maztican Campaign Guide. There is a lot being changed, but nothing too drastic. I knew the game far, far less back then and man were some of my rules wonky.

Lopango and the monsters next.

Another one, this one for plants.
The face palm. Excellent source of information in the middle of the jungle or on a tropical island, though they can only speak through mimicry.
https://imgur.com/bdeWzPb

Strangleweed, it's in the name
https://imgur.com/1wNTkVB

This one might be mixing too many genres.
https://imgur.com/J9IA7aY

Haven't finished writing this one. Though I imagine deserts like house of tezca.
https://imgur.com/3z2EZO4

Jupiter bloodsucker, always a fun one. Though low level.
https://imgur.com/lRl6aj6

Cobra flower, always a classic.
https://imgur.com/lqZy340

And just to **** with Faerun arcane casters, witch grass.

I also have the mantrap from tomb of Annihilation, cause I love the false appearance mechanic. It can swallow the last person in the group, and remain motionless as it consumes. See how long until the group realizes they're one down, then search frantically through jungle to find their lost compatriot.

Second page of ezcochitli. The spores remind me of that awesome scene with Oscar Isaac in Annihilation with the moving parts under the skin.

You might look into some of the Jamaican duppy stories if you want more island monsters. A personal favorite that I wanted to write up was Rollin’ Calf and Hoppin’ Bwoy.

Also Luska of the Bahamas is an awesome dragon.

I've been slowly working my way through the various jumbees.
I've got the soucouyant. A hag that can turn into a fireball. Gonna base off hag but with hishna magic, and the fireform ability of fire elemental
https://imgur.com/JqgdoEX

The choncon. A head that flies with its ears. Gonna base that off of the flameskull, but with pluma and maybe hishna magic.

And True World Bestiary beat me to the luskan

ABSOLUTELY my favorite thing I've created or even just read about. Killing this thing is ajournary unto itself. Def a good choice for a monster of the week. 2hp cat into thunderous wave is a mood.

Try sleeping while thinking of this thing.

Huay Chivo. I made him a little lower level than one would expect for such a creature with his standing. I was thining with his expert shapechanging he can get out of a lot of scraps, and he's best as a string puller of campaigns.

Some tabaxi can't hack it.
https://imgur.com/lME25Gj

rolling Calf jumbie. Terrifyingly strong
https://imgur.com/gtubgjP

werebat to go with weresharks, wereeagles, werepiranha....
https://imgur.com/Q8CcGKx

Buck, good luck contractor
https://imgur.com/bVjyN0T

Piratical creature, for everyone hoping for a planescape book. The hadozee from way back when.

Never leave home without my tiny silver snake.

K'aacea is latin american-indigenous caribbean, but its on top of enigmatic advanced civilizational ruins. So there's some leftover experiments, like medusa variants, nemean creatures, stygian creatures, minotaur hybrids, etc.
