[Mystara 2300 BC] Villains and Heroes

Post by Chimpman »

Hi folks,

I'd like to conduct a little experiment (for which I'll need the help of my fellow Piazzans). The Mystara 2300 BC project is coming along nicely, and in an effort to gage those currently following our progress (and in an attempt to generate more material for the setting ;) ), I'd like to ask members of the community to create some character concepts based on the following two Nation Overviews:

Empire of Mogreth
The Shimmering Lands

Character concepts can be either villains (suitable for use by the DM) or heroes that can be used as player characters. Since our overviews are mainly fluff and not tied directly to any specific rules system, your character concepts can be based on the rules system of your choice (or none at all - feel free to post purely fluff contributions).

Sadly I have no monetary prizes to offer so I'm not going to call this a Contest, however, as has been suggested in another thread promising characters may feature prominently in one of the Gazetteers being developed or possibly in any future Adventure Paths that are developed for the setting (the one most appropriate for these characters probably being The Road to Isshum!).

Thanks for posting this, John! Let me add to what he's said - your characters will get nice roles in upcoming products, and your names will live on forever in the credits! ;)

Ok, here's something to get things started - a band of Iconic Characters. These could be used as NPCs (either friends or rivals) or could also be used as pre-gen characters.

Band of the Lantern
The Band of the Lantern, so named for their shared goal of bringing light to the dark places of the world, operates mainly in the wilderness of the the Frontierlands and nearby territories.

Molnohk Frihn, CN Dwarf Radiomancer
Molnohk is a dwarf of middling age from the Thallyste province in the Shimmering Lands. His brown hair is peppered with gray around the temples and his bushy beard covers the entirety of his face, but refuses to grow on his chin. A radiomancer of some skill, Molnohk wears billowing rust red robes covered in technomantic runes and with ancient Blackmoorian trinkets dangling among its folds. Underneath the garment lies the contorted remnants of his right hand and arm, twisted and corrupted by the very craft that so obsesses Molnohk.

As the youngest son of Frihn Estate, Molnohk always knew he had little hope of claiming an inheritance. Instead he embraced his studies and his chosen craft, spending several formative years under the tutelage of the Radiomancers of Himnem. Not content to gain his knowledge from books alone, Molnohk decided to strike out on his own, constantly searching for artifacts and rumors of ancient Blackmoor. His current base of operations in Theliir allows him easy access to the Dawn Lands across Dawn Sea as well as to the savage Frontierlands to the south and even cursed Taymora beyond.

Molnohk first saw Azessh fighting in the Isshum Arena and knew right away that her skills would prove useful in his own endeavors. The two have since embarked on many expeditions together and seem to have an unspoken bond - which Molnohk assumes is just Azessh showing him the respect and deference that he deserves. The two stumbled upon Yidaberu during one such venture and Molnohk immediately recognized a kindred explorer. Curi he dislikes, considering her a pretentious upstart, but he tolerates her presence since her powers have served the crew well in several tight situations.

Azessh, LN Troglodyte Sell-sword
A hatchling from a fairly affluent family, Azessh is nonetheless an imposing figure of muscle and claws. Her bright green scales are tinged with a touch of indigo and shimmer iridescently when hit by the right lighting. The size of the blue crest atop her head marks her clearly as a female, but few who would hold that against her walk away unscathed. In addition to the gold and silver jewelry that adorns her hide, she also dons a utilitarian leather harness designed to carry a vast array of weapons and tools.

Uninterested in her father’s mercantile business and quickly tiring of the privilege her station brought her, Azessh became a thrill seeker fighting in the Arena of Isshum. Through skill and luck, she was able to stay alive and earn the love of the crowd, but still Azessh wanted more. Seeking ever more thrills, she began to hire herself out as a mercenary to adventurers and fortune seekers throughout Mogreth. Her journeys to far away lands only serve to accentuate the feelings of emptiness she feels upon returning home.

Azessh signed on as a guard and mercenary for one of Molnohk’s expeditions and became completely enthralled with the experience. Now she anticipates their journeys even more than fighting in the arena. Yidaberu, being the typical treacherous Taymoran, is not trusted, and she always keeps an eye on him. His companion Curi is another matter however, and Azessh genuinely enjoys her company. The two females have surprisingly much in common, not the least of which is an overwhelming sense of honor and fair play.

Yidaberu of Tycur, CG Human (Taymoran) Sneak
Yidaberu is a handsome man in his mid twenties with the light complexion and dark curly hair and eyes that is common to his people. He sports a puckered red scar from his left ear to his right collarbone, but his quick wit and flashing smile rarely leave any ill at ease in his presence. The gray, knee length tunic he wears is nondescript and utilitarian, and the many hidden pockets within are quite useful for storing whatever he might chance to grab.

Growing up on the desperate streets of Tycur, Yidaberu spent much of his unhappy childhood darting through the streets and back alleys of the City of Night. Constant pressure from Tycur’s press gangs, and even worse from the personal minions of the Queen of Night, eventually convinced Yidaberu to seek his fortune elsewhere. During a brief stay in Taymoraz, he came to realize there were alternatives to living under the rule of the vampire queens. Since then he has traveled to far lands, constantly searching for some way to free his people.

Curi Cava found Yidaberu after he only narrowly escaped minions of the Queen of Night, and took pity on him, nursing him back to health. Since then Yidaberu has fallen in love with her, and refuses to leave her side. The two met Molnohk and Azessh while exploring in the Frontierlands and decided to pool their resources. Having already overcome his prejudices regarding one of the Taymoran’s “ancestral enemies” Yidaberu had no problems at all accepting Azessh as a member of his team. While he respects Molnohk, he also suspects the dwarf is more than a little insane and fears at some point the two may come into contention.

Curi Cava, LG Human (Inti) Sun-priestess
Long black hair, parted in the middle of her head and braided on either side, frames the golden skin of Curi’s face. Her prominent nose and piercing brown eyes give her a stern and imposing appearance, despite her small stature. The woollen tunic she wears is decorated with brightly colored designs, all woven directly into the fabric. The story it tells is of her people emerging from the dark sheltered world of Picari Palaqwi to once again claim their rights beneath the sun. Dangling from her belt is Curi’s ever present obsidian shard mace.

Born in the caverns beneath the Picari Plateau, Curi has only recently emerged from her ancestral shelter to discover the surface world. She served her people as a healer in the many battles they have had with the Taymorans in recent years, but has since heard her immortal patron calling her to do greater things. Convinced that there is a disease rotting her people from within, Curi has taken it upon herself to root it out and destroy it, however her actions have not won friends in the Blind Council. Now Curi travels all the lands under the sun, open to the many wonders that the immortals choose to show her, and gathering powerful friends around her in the hopes of confronting the darkness clinging to her people’s past.

Curi found Yidaberu bleeding to death in the mountains and saved his life. Since then she has come to understand that the two of them have very similar goals - both seeking ways to free their people from some dark evil gripping them. Because of this she tends to think of him as a brother, and often finds his attentions towards her annoying. In Azessh she sees a kindred spirit and a bold warrior, although she finds the trog to be somewhat distant and cold. She speaks only infrequently with Molnohk, and fears that despite his skills and power, the dwarf is dangerous.

I love snippet-characters like this! Any chance we can get stats for them? Either you've put window dressings on normal classes, or you're holding out on us! I'm wondering if Radiomancy is a maybe-less powerful working of the Radiance (been a while since I read my Gaz3)? Or maybe even a system like Rafiel's Shamans, but with the wasting penalties not put off a generation....?

;) Honestly, regarding the classes - it's a little bit of both. I've been shying away from tying the Mystara 2300 BC material I've been working on with any specific rules set. The above characters are meant to be some flavor of wizard, fighter, thief, and cleric, but I think there's plenty of room to play around within those designations. I'd love to see someone stat these guys up (in several different rules systems), but I just don't have the time... I'd rather focus on getting one of my 2300 BC supplements finished up.

As for Radiomancy, those ideas are pretty much along the lines I've been thinking of as well. For the Wasting penalties I've been thinking of implementing something like Taint rules. So a Radiomancer could be treated like a normal wizard in most cases, only using the radiance to boost his/her powers when needed... however use of the radiance should come with a price. Once your Rad Taint builds up to a certain level, then "something bad" would happen. That's just a general idea, since I haven't spent much time and effort on rules system type questions at this point.

Here is a second batch of adventurers, this one hailing from the nations in and around the Sea of Dread.

Crew of the Red Tide
Taking the name of their ship as their own, the crew of the Red Tide, led by Red Elyssa, roams the Sea of Dread looking for adventure and opportunity. All of them have cause to hate and fear Adhuza, the major power of the area, and they actively seek ways to torment that nation on every occasion.

Captain Elyssa Naihr “aka Red Elyssa” CG Human (Corsair) Swashbuckler
Elyssa Naihr is an attractive woman in her late twenties. The bright red locks around her face are always tightly braided, but the rest she lets hang in loose curls that fall well beneath her shoulders. Elyssa’s eyes are as blue as a summer storm at sea, and just as dangerous. She dresses in linens and silks (when she can find them), favoring clothing dyed in reds and yellows, and accented with stark patches of white and black. Beneath a short cape always kept draped over her right side, Elyssa hides her right hand from casual observers. The hand is light green in color, larger than normal, and scaly - grafted onto her body after she lost her own hand in a bloody battle.

Born on the Corsair Isles, Elyssa Naihr traces her ancestry all the way back to the Dawn Lands. Generations ago, her forefathers were taken from their lands and sold into slavery in Mogreth. She would have been borne into such a fate if her grandparents had not participated in the Slave Revolt a hundred years ago. Instead she grew up in relative freedom, though she always fought hard to improve her station. Elyssa signed on as a seahand at a very early age and fought her way to the captaincy of the Red Tide by the time she was 24.

Elyssa hired Herrindal as an interim stormtamer after her own was lost in a battle with the Adhuzan navy. The two quickly became lovers and Herrindal has stayed by her side ever since. She met Mahohl in much the same way, although in that case her fortunes were dire indeed. Mahohl saved her life and replaced her lost hand with one from a fallen enemy. The two talk often, though Elyssa finds Mahohl to be distant and mysterious. Krriljruk she tolerates because of his many talents, but does not trust. Too many times has she fought shark-kin shock troops under the command of Adhuza.

Herrindal NG Elf Stormtamer
Tall, for an elf, and pale of skin, Herrindal sports a long mane of blue gray hair and a thin, neatly trimmed beard and moustache. Shells, bone, and shards of metal strewn in long lines dangle from every piece of clothing that he wears, from his tunic and breaches to the hooded cloak that constantly covers his head. Herrindal’s slightest movement sends a chiming symphony through the air, and the elf rarely moves without making it a flourish.

Nearly 200 years ago, Herrindal’s family made the decision to leave their homeland of Vulcania, joining the Second Separatists. Since that time, Herrindal has been travelling back and forth between his people and his homeland, ensuring that the colonists were well supplied in their long travels. 100 years ago Vulcania was destroyed in cataclysmic volcanic eruptions, after which Herrindal and his people joined with Ilsundals’ First Migration. The bulk of the elves now lives on the Savage Coast, but Herrindal journeys through the Sea of Dread seeking the lost elven tribes and acting as a forerunner for his people. His skills at taming the seas are highly prized both by his own people and the other sea faring nations in the region.

Herrindal has known Krriljruk since he rescued the adolescent right after his village was destroyed. Since then he has kept an eye on the shark-kin, feeling somewhat responsible for the Adhuzan retribution unleashed upon his family and friends. Red Elyssa is a useful ally, as well as an enjoyable companion, though the elf feels few lasting emotions for the woman. Mohohl is the person that Herrindal is most interested in, and he has actively been trying to establish formal relations between his people and hers for several years.

Krriljruk, the Last Aukuk CN Shark-kin Enforcer
Green-blue scales with the texture of rough sand cover Krriljruk’s entire body, and his sharp toothy grin set below jet black eyes have a way of setting folk on edge. Krriljruk wears little more than a loincloth, though he often slings a bone shield and trident across his back. The right side of his body is covered in green and purple tattoos, while the left side is marred by scarred slash marks - each representing one of his dead kin.

When he was an adolescent, Krriljruk’s tribe, the Aukuk, made a deal with a group of elven merchants, granting them safe passage through the Dragon’s Teeth reefs and allowing them to enter unmolested into the Sea of Dread. Once the Adhuzan priesthood learned of this deal, his entire village was wiped out. Krriljruk was the only survivor, lucky enough to escape by climbing aboard an elven ship racing away from the carnage. Since then he has roamed the Sea of Dread espousing his hatred for the unjust god of Adhuza and inciting others to oppose him.

Krriljruk has known Herrindal for a long as he can remember, and while grateful to the elf for rescuing him, the shark-kin bears some deep seated resentment towards his friend, still blaming Herrindal for the devastation of his village. He admires Mahohl, seeing in the Maker another kindred spirit set against the will of Adhuza. Captain Elyssa fills a much needed role of authority for Krriljruk, and he is totally devoted to her.

Mahohl LN Maker Fleshcrafter
Though vaguely human shaped, it is easy to see at first glance that Mahohl is nothing of the sort. Most of her features are thin and elongated, and her skin takes on a light blue tint. Her lack of hair accentuates other facial features; large nose, elongated ears, and saucer like eyes. Plane cut robes made of strange materials in blue and white cover her gangly frame and other than her head the only portion of her body to be seen are her spindly fingers. The jewelry Mahohl wears is sleek and form fitting with the few embedded jewels often glowing with a faint inner light.

Somewhat of an enigma to outsiders, Mohohl left the Refuge of the Makers several decades ago to explore the Known World for herself. Since then she has studied in Himnem with the Radiomancers of the Gate of Light, been employed by some of the wealthiest houses in Isshum as a birthing cave attendant, has even journeyed deep into the frozen lands of the interior to trade secrets with the troll queens of Grondheim. In all her journeys she has only been unwelcome in the lands of Adhuza, where the ruler priests look upon her with fear and disgust.

After healing a serious wound for Captain Elyssa, Mahohl decided to join her crew. Although she still desires to travel the world, Mahohl appreciates the closeness to her own home that serving aboard the Red Tide affords her. The elf, Herrindal, she sees as a schemer and keeps him at arms length, however she has taken quite a liking to the shark-kin, Krriljruk. Although often savage, she sees a great potential in him and his people and is determined to study him further.

...and now some of these characters will find new life in the next session of my campaign! :D

My long-running campaign has sent the party to the Dreamlands of Mystara, where a fragment of Taymoran Nosferatu Queen Jadikira survives still, and has re-created Tamoraz and given it flesh. She dreams of extending her influence in the Dreamlands, possibly even resurrecting all of Taymora (or her memory of it) in dreams, under her dominion.

The party will be sent to the Frontierlands by the Queen to seek an item of importance - something that will help her remember more of her life and become more fully "herself". They will go to Aresh (or what passes for it in dreams) to find out where it went...which will lead them to meet the Band of the Lantern, who suspect the truth behind Jadikira's motives...

Digging this up makes me happy.
