"You have indeed touched one of the main point of debate in my Church - Elwyn says - can evil be considered a free choice or it is rather the result of manipulation of weak and suffering minds? Yet it can be hardly disputed that the Leptarian priests, spreading hatred and violence, are indeed guilty. Still I would prefer to capture them alive, and try to study their mindset. Only if we can understand evil, we can defeat it".
I'm fine with this. I only wanted to hear a good reason not to kill them.
Karto listens to Elwyn but then replies to Bofar. "Never killed prisoner because I mostly feel is a cowardly act, even if you may think at times that goblins and orcs deserve it. Yet they rarely kill prisoners, because they normally prefer to keep them as slaves, or sell them. But it happens there is some fanatic shaman who decide to sacrifice prisoners for some rite. It is true that humans probably have killed humanoid prisoners more often, fostering hatred and resentment, and pushing them to fight to the death rather than submit to capture. Another reason why it is never a good policy to kill prisoners. You breed more determined enemies".

You continue onwards until you bein a hard descent down a very convoluted and steep path down a hill, until you reach a thick forest of majestic oaks and chestnuts, with plenty of underbrush. Juvlak turns and comes near you.
"We have reached the home of our friends - he says - now we will have to wait for them".
He waits in silence, leaving you a bit confused until you feel like a small puff of air near you.
Then a figure appears from nothing in front of your eyes. He looks like an armored elf, with sword and shield, but he is just about a foot and half tall and flies in the air with butterfly wings.
"Oh we do have visitors - he says in a language similar enough to elven, but a bit difficult to understand - the hills are quite interesting these days. Kidnappings, dragons, immortals, an army and now a goblin with gnomes, dwarves, halflings and humans. Quite an interesting bunch you are!"

"Greetings Shielint - Juvlak says to the small creature - we need to speak with Mirko". The goblin explains Shielint is a pixie, and is not the only one around. Mirko is the druid who lives in this region. He is a human, but he had good relations with goblins.
The pixie flies forward, and darts between some trees until a man dressed in brown appears, surrounded by several flying creatures with butterfly wings. Some of them disappear into thin air when you approach.
The man, with unkept brown hair and beard, looks indeed more or less as you imagined a druid, wooden staff included. He smiles to you and speak in Thyatian with a strong accent which is partly Traladaran and partly something else you never heard before.
"So I have some visitors from Highforge, interesting. You are numerous and you appear strong, and I see you have captured Thorn himself. Still, you are not strong enough to face what is happening here. But you are lucky, you can join the army which is coming this way. However, I am not sure I should help you. My unique interest is that both you and your enemies leave us, the rightful inhabitants of the forest, alone. I am not sure yet if I accomplish this better by helping you, or the others.."

Lucius leaves the negotiation to Bonth -- not only the gnome's a more official representative of his government, but his Thyatian mindset and manners would easily rub this wild man.

"It seems that the Iron Ring slavers are building a fortress in the hills - Bonth says - surely you do not want that. If they stay, they will cut down trees, or worse".
"Yes, I fear they will do that. Indeed, they are already doing that. However if the army which is gathering to the east destroys them, the humans could decide to settle the woods in numbers, and that would be even worse, in my point of view".
The druid understands, from Bonth and yours perplexed expressions, you do not understand what he is talking about.
"You do not know about the kidnapping of Alerena Kelvin! - the druid says - Apparently, the girl was taken by the Iron Ring and his brother is now coming to the Wufwolde hills with an army. Another army is coming from Penhaligon, with Arteris and Kaerin Penhaligon and the famous knight Fain Flinn. The two armies will join and proceed to the Sanctuary, which is now becoming an Iron Ring fortress. What the human brats do not know, that's all a trap by Leptar. The kidnapping is just a ploy to lure the forces of Kelvin and Penhaligon here, and destroy them. But why should I warn or aid them? A major human defeat will guarantee the balance of nature for several more years. And I can always hamper the Iron Ring After they had some losses, even if they win. If you think a bit about it, that would also be the best for the Nightstalkers and for Highforge."

Bofar barely manages to stay silent after hearing what the druid is saying. He puffs a few times and then walks away kicking some stones.

Bonth says nothing to the druid but just nods, and silences with a wave of his hand Karto and Elwyn when they are about to speak. Then he just says to Mirko you must discuss a bit the situation among yourselves. Mirko shrugs and nods, and leave you alone. The pixies and the sprites disappear.
"We cannot let the Iron Ring destroy the army of Kelvin and Penhaligon - Elwyn says - they are allies of Threshold and we must warn them". Petrus and Arkan nods in agreement, and Dorn has to agree too.
"Also I want to kill the damn slavers because they killed my friend Teish", Karto says, referring to the wizard which was killed in the mission to retrieve the stone giant egg.
"Yes and we do have a debt of sort with the young Desmond Kelvin, who saved us in Guido's Fort. Still, we are in the druid's own groove and we will hardly be able to escape the Nightstalkers and warn our friends without his help, so we must find a way to persuade him. I am open to suggestions", Bonth says.

"We should promise him something from Highforge", Karto says.
"If the Iron Ring defeats the army of Kelvin and Penhaligon their supporters among my people will grow even stronger. With the help of the druid and the fairies, we could be able to rescue this human girl and stop the armies before they fall into the trap, but it will be dangerous", Juvlak says.
"What could we offer the druid to persuade him?" Gila asks.
"We do have something extremely precious, we could call it our secret weapon - Bonth says - but if we give it to him, we will no longer have it available for the rest of our mission!".
Gila, Karto, Milo and Talla apparently know of what he is speaking about, while the others look just as confused as you are...

Lucius is definitely alarmed at the idea of turning a powerful weapon over to that madman, and points out that the druid clearly stated he is an enemy, not a friend. It would be more sensible to use such a weapon to coerce him. Lucius also suggests that the druid's attachment to the trees could perhaps give us a leverage to negotiate from a stronger position.

Bonth tells the druid you will camp in the forest and discuss what to do. The druid does not seem to care much, and let you be. Bonth continues to speak in Thyatian, because he thinks that the pixies and sprites, who could be invisible all around you, will not understand all of it. He speaks in a low voice anyway.
"This is our secret weapon - the gnome says, showing you a blue sapphire the size of a walnut - a gift from the Blue Lady to obtain aerial support. - Bonth explains briefly to Dorn, Elwyn and Juvlak that the Blue Lady is a powerful blue dragon of the Moor - It was meant to call for help in destroying the hideout of the Iron Ring. But now we know such a hideout has become a strong fortress, with an army ready to spring a trap, so I think we have to change our plans.
We cannot simply go near the hideout with the horses as originally planned because we will be late to prevent the trap and anyway the Nightstalkers followers of Thorn will likely get to us first.
We could give the gem to the druid, as a gift. Gila can speak to the Blue Lady through the gem, and I think she will be willing to help the druid should he needs her. In exchange for that, the druid could help us freeing Alerena Kelvin. He, and mostly his fairy allies, could be the only ones able to point us in the right direction. If we free Alerena, we could warn the armies of Kelvin and Penhaligon and attack the Iron Ring with them.
Another possibility is to use the gem now ourselves. We could be able to fly directly to the Kelvin and Penhaligon armies and warn them, but we will hardly be able to find Alerena Kelvin in the woods and free her.
That is why to make a pact with the druid could be the best course of action, even if we do not like him. Trying to coerce him, even with the gem, could be extremely dangerous as we do not know how many fairy allies he has here, but we have to suppose there are many. But tell me what you think, please.

Bonth looks at each of you, waiting for your opinion.

Giving the gem to the druid may put Highforge and Karameikos in danger. The druid may well use the dragons against us. If you don't think we can use them to threaten him and the fairies, the let's use it to warn the armies.

Considering what the druid just said, I am not comfortable with the idea of giving him the gem and the dragons. Who knows how he would use it.

I think he is a little out of touch the leaders of Kelvin and Penhaligon would more than likely work with him to keep any untoward destruction that would occur in the likely event of colonization. the iron ring and their armies would flat out kill him, capture, enslave and sell the pixies and any other beings they can find. That being said if the ring really is in a fortified position with an army of the size we are hearing about there is no gaurentee that the gem would grant us victory.. Why not then compromise and give him the gem and have him dispatch messengers for us a pair of birds or something with a missive from Bonth warning both forces thus allowing us to save the lady

"Indeed Taradain your idea could be applied, but probably Bofar and Lucius are right in saying the druid could not be the best recipient of our trust. I should speak with the Blue Lady and let her know the situation.." Bonth says.
Gila nods and she and Bonth retire in a tent with the gem, then say to catch some sleep, as you will probably hear news the next day.
In the morning indeed during breakfast you see an apparently human girl in a blue dress coming from the druid's groove. She is not apparently the same figure you met two years ago as the Blue Lady, but maybe one of her agents. The girl speaks to you in Thyatian.
"Greetings, we have an agreement with the druid, he has accepted to reveal the location of the group which is now taking Alerena Kelvin to the Sanctuary, a temple which the Iron Ring is now using as a fortified hideout. You will have to stop that group, and also to warn the pursuing armies of Kelvin and Penhaligon of the trap. We have the means to allow you to travel fast but you will have to leave here the horses and any excessive baggage, and you will have to divide your group, maybe in three".
The girl speaks for a while with Bonth, Gila, Karto and the halflings, then they return to you and Bonth addresses everyone.
"We need some volunteers to go warn the human armies. You will travel in a very unusual way, but this is the less dangerous mission. We need some other volunteers to free Alerena Kelvin, and this will be dangerous. We also need a third group to infiltrate the Iron Ring Sanctuary. This is the most dangerous mission, as you may not have an escape route. So choose carefully: first, second or third group? You are free to decide, none will be blamed".
The others discuss a bit among themselves, then Elwyn says she would like to warn the armies, as the other missions may likely include violence. Petrus and Arkan will continue as her escort.
Agnja and Blago argue among themselves, but eventually decide on the rescue of Alerena, much to Blago's dismay.
Gila says she will then go to the Sanctuary, but will leave Gabriel to the rescue of Alerena.
Milo and Talla think they may be more useful at the Sanctuary, and Karto wishes to go with them.
The goblin Juvlak will go to the human armies, as he wants to discuss with the leaders.
Bonth will lead the group to the rescue of Alerena. Kesh is torn between the rescue and the Sanctuary, as it is likely both groups will need a cleric. If Dorn goes to the rescue, he will go to the Sanctuary. If not, he will go to the rescue.
Indeed Dorn, having a romantic interest toward Elwyn, would prefer to go with her.
Dim too would very much like to go with Agnja.

(Express any doubt, ask any question or propose alternatives as you wish, then decide what to do, Dorn and Dimitri will be sent to the armies and the rescue respectively as explained above, if they do not choose. All the others will be sent to warn the armies if they do not choose).

Splitting our forces has historically not gone so well in the past but i see a definite need for splitting up. However i am torn i can easily go on either the rescue or the infiltration. we could turn the rescue into an infiltration depending on how much information we get out of the kidnappers. If not that then i will go infiltrate the Sanctuary

"Well the mission at the Sanctuary is infiltration, not assault, is that clear? - Bonth says - this means the purpose should be learn about our enemies, not trying to kill them and expose us. If you want a clear fight, the rescue mission is what you are looking for. I want you to be free to choose what you feel more confortable with, but be aware of what you are supposed to do. The Blue Lady has gifts for us. - Bonth shows you a bunch of small objects which looks like blueberries - These will polymorph us into anything, but I would suggest hawks. Any object we are carrying will be polymorphed with us, but nothing more. The effect will last for about 4 hours. The group including Elwyn, Petrus, Arkan, Juvlak and Dorn will go to warn the armies. In hawk form, they will be able to reach them quickly, without risk of being stopped by Nightstalker warriors. Still, beware of arrows and griffons. The group including me, Agnja, Blago, Gabriel, Kesh and Dim should be able to take Arelena's kidnappers by surprise. We will revert to humanoid forms when we are near them, and attack. Then we will move to join the armies, if we succeed. The group including Gila, Milo and Talla should fly there in hawk form, return to their normal form and then use another form, maybe mice, to infiltrate and explore. They may also need another berry to turn back into birds and escape. It is quite risky, but it should be worth it. Given that, maybe Karto, Bofar and Lucius could be more useful in the rescue of Alerena. I think we will have time to infiltrate and attack the sanctuary another time. Taradain instead could be useful in the infiltration group, if she dares to go. I do not want to force you, but now you have more informations, so what do you say?
Karto agrees to join the rescue group. He mumbles a bit about what madness it is to fly like an hawk.
Gila says she will infiltrate the Sanctuary. Her magic could be useful to protect the others from being discovered.
The emissary of the Blue Lady says that the druid has accepted to keep for a while Thorn and the other goblin prisoners. Agnja however will take the one she has charmed, Much, as she believe he could still be useful.

Bonth divides the magical berries among you. Elwyn, Petrus, Arkan, Juvlak and Dorn are the first to take them, after leaving their mounts in the groove. As soon as they eat the berries, they are turned into hawks, flying in confusion for a while before one of them, probably Elwyn, leads the others to the east, where the blue girl told to search for the armies...

(Now this thread will follow only the group which includes Dorn, I will create other threads for the rest of you, links will appear below)

Dorn finds the experience of flying in hawk form exilarating, a feeling of freedom he never experienced before. The others seem likewise thrilled, but all try to follow Elwyn, who is leading the group. After just half an hour of flying, you see the armies below you. About two thousand men marching in the forested hills are not very hard to spot, as it is leading group, surrounded by knights of the Order of the Griffon and the Order of the Three Suns. The leaders are clearly there, two young men, one young woman and a middle age knight. You realize they must be Desmond Kelvin II, Kaerin Penhaligon, Arteris Penhaligon and Fain Flinn.
Elwyn descend on a nearby tree, far enough not to be spotted when you turn back into humans. When you have your normal form again, Elwyn proposes to intercept the column to talk to the leaders, and the others agree.
