[TC1] Character Gen/Session Zero

Greetings!

The Play by Post itself starts here.

Out of Character discussion can be had here.

If you're a newcomer, and would like to join the fun, this PbP runs on the Basic iteration of the 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons framework.

Essential Links: For starters, character generation will use the Standard Array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 (modified by race/sub-race). Characters will start at 2nd level. To reiterate: This is set in Mystara, not the Realms, so no dragonborn, tieflings, drow.

Even though I'm going mainly with the Basic Rules, I'll allow the human variant (for human PCs only):

Ability Score Increase. Two different ability scores of your choice increase by 1.
Skills. You gain proficiency in one skill of your choice.
Feat. You gain one feat of your choice. (PHB Ch. 5) (Contact me via PM if you do not have a copy of the PHB)

Regarding Languages:
You can color your character's dialogue to denote language, (with the "drop" looking icon across the top of the full text input window) if you like. Thus far, Thyatian Common is blue, and goblin is green. Rusty red is reserved for DM's game-mechanical notation.

NPCs are assumed to speak Thyatian Common unless noted otherwise, and their dialogue has not yet had to be colored-in.

Good to know.

The weather was too good this week. I worked on my backyard deck. I'll do my character Monday or Tuesday.

Who else is working on their character?

I've outsourced someone else to create my character. :)

Not a lie though.

Right, well here we go...

Dwarf Cleric (Kagyar) – From Highforge

Name: Haldon Skarrag

Str 13, Int 12, Wis 17 (15 +1 racial bonus, +1 from feat), Dex 10, Con 16 (14 +2 racial bonus), Cha 8.

Lawful Good.

Feat: Observant

Height: 4’ 2”

Trained from birth to be a Priest of Kagyar, he has always been a faithful and dutiful servant of the Dwarven religion. Until recently. As he was going around the smaller settlements close to Highforge to administer to the faithful, he came across an injured female half-Orc with a babe in arms. Not being able to turn away from the innocence of the child and mother and leaving them to die, he aided them as he could and brought them back to Highforge to recover. The debate in Highforge raged for days. Some wanted to kill the pair outright, “The only good Orc is a dead Orc!” Others, not wanting blood on their hands, wished to expel her back to the wilds, where she would surely have perished as well, having been ostracised from her tribe. Realising this, and unable to persuade his fellow Dwarves not to go down either of these paths, he decided the only truly good and right decision was to take her to a human community where, although she and the child may be on the margins of society, they may at least be able to make a place for themselves. So, he brought them north to Threshold.
Having broken the unwritten rules of Dwarven society, he feels that he cannot return to Highforge and his home and must wander until he has made his peace with himself and the Dwarven Church.
Haldon will carefully weight all the options available to him before making a decision, but once a decision has been made, he is stubborn, even for a Dwarf. He is kind and generous, but can be a touch gruff, and can have difficulty in convincing others that his view is the right one.

Known Spells:
L0: Spare the Dying
Light
Sacred Flame
L1: Bless
Cure Wounds
Shield of Faith

Sorry if I was unclear.

The initial feat choice is only available for human characters. ('cause they don't get all the racial abilities that demi-humans get)

Go ahead and pick the starting equipment, and then roll for the starting wealth by class in Chapter 5.

Looks like the band is coming together. Another player has joined, and is cooking up his PC, a halfling rogue.

So the party is shaping up to be:

Dwarf cleric
Elf wizard
Elf rogue
Halfling rogue

I seem to've lost my fourth player....

Do you guys want to proceed with three? I can always fill the spot with an NPC man at arms type.

I don't have my next week's work schedule yet, but I would not be adverse to starting, say, after July fourth, if that works for y'all?

Monday July 8th would work for me.

Some last few notes, Angel:

As a wood elf, your character is most likely of the Vayalia, a nation that has lived in the woods of eastern Karameikos/western Thyatis since before those countries ever existed. Rather than the newcomer Illsundal, the Vyalia still revere the Immortal Ordana, original patroness of the elves.

Vyalia are divided into several clans, which broadly specialize in certain things:

Blueleaf: Artists, artisans
Diamarak: Hunters, Woodsmen
Etherdyl: Philosophers
Hierdyl: Scholars, Sages and Wizards
Greenheights: Diplomats, celebrants
Treeshield: Warriors

You don't have to pick one of these "main" clans -- there are numerous unnamed smaller ones. But, you know. Flavor text :D

Last few notes, shesheyan:

As a High Elf, if you want your PC to come from Karameikos, most likely he'll be from the Callarii, of the western Radlebb Woods area. Unless you have something different in mind... I don't think you're much of a stranger to Mystaran lore. (but I know what I usually get for thinking....)

From your background hooks, it sounds as if your elf would fit in perfectly with Clan Mealidil:
Elves of Alfheim wrote:Clan Mealidil
Clan Mealidil claims to be the true clan of the founder of Alfheim, Mealiden Red Arrow. They claim that this achievement by one of their own grants them the position of cultural arbiters for all that is truly elvish, and they back up the claim with an extensive library of writings and other recordings on the history of elves and those they deal with.

The collection is so large that they had to grow a special combined Sentinel and Home Tree to hold it all. Most books or other records of historical interest found by adventurer elves wind up in the library of Mealidor.

Mealidil is easily the most conservative of the clans. Their leaders consistently wear out-of-date clothing fashioned after that worn by the followers of Mealiden 1,800 years ago. Their answer for any problem is to research the Annals of Mealiden and find what he did in a similar situation.

That works for me.

Since we don't have the pleasure of sitting around a table together, I decided to create a digital character sheet and use an online dice roller that keeps a nice log of all my rolls. Both are public, so no account is needed to view them.

Horvik Character Sheet
Horvik Dice Rolls

If you would like to do the same, the accounts are free. DDB is very limited on what data can be put on the sheet automatically unless you fork over more $$ to buy content you likely already own (I hate that). But, since we are playing using the 5e Basic Rules, most of what you need is available and anything that wasn't I just created manually.

I thought DDB had most (if not all) of the Basic/SRD material available for free....

The Feats are technically part of the PHB, so they are paid material. I had to manually create that and the associated actions. Other than that, I think it was just the trinket that I had to add.

G'day all.

Looking to play, but not sure where I might fit in. Are you missing one of your other players?

If Wizard is already taken, then I was thinking of Human (I think they get a feat.) Ranger if that's allowed.

The Basic Rules call back to the Classic D&D setup of fighter/wizard/cleric/thief of the earlier basic sets. As such, they've pared down the classes to their "core/iconic" roles: evoker wizards ("Fireball!!"), fight-y fighters, thief-ly rogues, life domain (heal-y) clerics.

You could certainly do a ranger-ish type of character, by bending your skill choices towards Survival and Stealth. Also, it'd probably be possible to do a bit more with that bonus feat that humans can get at character creation.

Basically all the basics are covered, so b pay whatever you prefer. I think the party currently consists of:

Dwarf Cleric
Elf Wizard
Elf Thief
Human Fighter

I read in the rules that only get the feat if I forego adding the ability modifiers. Now, I not sure if they maen that during character creation or each time I gain levels. It was optional rule I think. I just want to know your interpretation of it.
