Al Qadim to RQ6 conversion

Post by Coronoides » Mon Jan 28, 2019 9:20 pm

I came across this. Mythras used to be Runequest 6. This guy is converting AlQadim to Mythras.

Nice find. I'm no Mythras expert (nor an Al-Qadim expert, but I'm more familiar with the latter than the former), but my takeaway has been that Mythras is grittier than the more heroic/fantastic feel of Al-Qadim. I know there are dials that can be tweaked in d100 systems, so perhaps this is being taken into account.

What are your thoughts on whether this is a good match to capture the feel of Al-Qadim?

I think you are right. Mythras has gritty combat and a level of crunch not really suited to the Saturday Matinee Sinbad feel of Al Qadim. That said the passions rules from Mythras would be a great way to help players roleplay the culture.
A lighter BRP game like the endangered Magic World would be a better fit and then only if the Serious Wounds were taken out and the Heroic hit points option used.

Naw, al-Qadim is such an interesting little place, it works with all kinds of rules.

A few years ago we were using a mashup of D&D 5e and Hillfolk for our main game, and using a tweaked super gritty Lingering Injuries variant of 5e. It wasn't matinée AQ, it was… hmm… brutal pirate life in Hawa!

And then we had weekly side games using all sorts of systems. Microscope (with the Chronicle expansion) to find out the history of the crew's ship or our nemesis' swords, Cthulhu Dark to explore the lives of beggars and the hyper poor in Qudra, Dogs in the Vineyard for a pair of mamluks going from town to town and enforcing the law etc etc.

We tossed the "this is supposed to feel like a breezy adventure movie" thing out the window day one and we still had a great game. Not saying everyone needs to do that but I'm just saying major props to this guy if he digs Mythras and he digs AQ.

Does Mythras offer Hero Points? I know some of the later versions of RQ do. Hero Points dont work like Hit Points, but they can be used to improve dodge rolls or reduce damage. If you are generous with those, it could create a more heroic feel. I havent looked at Magic World, but that rule also looks interesting :)

Yep, they are called ‘Luck Points’. I prefer this terminology because I prefer ‘characters’ to the more limited ‘heroes’.
