[Star Trek] How many RPGs in the Star Trek universe?

Post by Havard » Sun Oct 08, 2017 9:37 pm

How many RPGs have been set in the Star Trek Universe? Let's also include the different RPGs set in the Star Fleet Universe in this thread. It seems there is a pretty long list leading up to the latest Star Trek Adventures RPG from Mophidius.

Star Trek Roleplaying Games
  • Star Trek: Adventure Gaming in the Final Frontier, produced by Heritage Models (1978)
  • Starfleet Voyages, produced by Terra Games Company (1982)
  • FASA Star Trek 1st Ed (1982, FASA)
  • FASA Star Trek 2nd Ed (1985, FASA)
  • Star Trek The Next Generation (1998, Last Unicorn Games (ICON System)
  • Star Trek: The Original Series (1999, Last Unicorn Games (ICON System)
  • Deep Space 9 (1999, Last Unicorn Games (ICON System)
  • Voyager, Free PDF (2000, Last Unicorn Games (ICON System)
  • Decipher Star Trek (CODA system 2002-2006)
  • Modiphius Star Trek (2F20 system 2017) - See discussuon here
*LUG also developed a Dune RPG written by Matt Colville.

Star Fleet Universe RPGs*
  • Star Fleet Universe (1979)
  • Prime Directive RPG (1993)
  • GURPS 3rd Ed Prime Directive (Steve Jackson Games, 2003)
  • GURPS 4th Ed Prime Directive (Steve Jackson Games, 2004)
  • Prime Directive D20 (2005)
  • Prime Directive D20 Modern (2008)
*=more details on the Star Fleet Universe and related RPGs here

Unofficial Star Trek RPGs
  • Space Patrol (1977)
  • Space Patrol; Star Trek: Adventure Gaming in the Final Frontier
  • Star Patrol: Starfleet Voyages
  • Starships & Spacemen (1978)
  • TWERPS: TWERPS TWEK (1992)
  • Where No Man Has Gone Before (2009): an exciting, fast-paced, and pulpy Star Trek ruleset based on Microlite20.
Which one do you recommend getting?

Not so long really, RPG wise you have:

- FASA Star Trek (1st ed 1982-1984, 2nd Ed 1985-1987)
- Prime Directive (original (1993), GURPS (3rd ed 2003, 4th ed 2004) or D20 (3.5 2005, modern 2008) version...Mongoose Traveller's version is on the work)
- Last Unicorn Games Star Trek/DS9/Next Generation (ICON 1 1999-2000) with a 2000 free Netbook for Voyager
- Decipher Star Trek (CODA system 2002-2006)
- Modiphius Star Trek (2F20 system 2017)
Roleplaying is not a Hobby...it's a Way of Life.

Consolidated projet thread

Don't ignore the early semi (or non) authorized Star Trek RPGs (and ones thinly disguised to avoid Paramount lawyer attention), and a newer "ST-like" game:

Space Patrol (1977): Space Patrol; Star Trek: Adventure Gaming in the Final Frontier; Star Patrol; and Starfleet Voyages—the various editions of Michael Scott’s original spacefaring RPG.

Starships & Spacemen (1978): an excellent, old-school game based on Star Trek and OD&D, by Capt. Leonard H. Kanterman, M.D., and the Star Explorer board game by Kanterman and Bonforte.

Where No Man Has Gone Before (2009): an exciting, fast-paced, and pulpy Star Trek ruleset based on Microlite20.

And then there are the SFU games: Star Fleet Universe (1979): The incredibly detailed TOS-based universe of the Star Fleet Battles tactical wargame, the Federation Space strategic wargame, and the Prime Directive role-playing game.

These are discussed here: http://oldschooltrek.proboards.com/

Wow, this is a massive list of RPGs in this universe!

There is also TWERPS TWEK, which is the TWERPS version of Star Trek from the humorous RPG by Reindeer Games. :)

Finally got around to updating this list!

While doing some additional research, I also came across the following:
Star Trek: Adventure Gaming in the Final Frontier, produced by Heritage Models (1978)
Starfleet Voyages, produced by Terra Games Company (1982)

Did I miss anything?

There is also Stellar Adventures, by Arion Games, that is a fairly flexible sci-fi ruleset that can be easily customised to run a Star Trek like campaign (as in the historic gamebook Starship Traveller by Steve Jackson).
