Order Placed for POD Calidar!

Post by Angel Tarragon »

I went ahead and splurged on the hardcover premium color version. I am very excited to learn more about Calidar. There are some themes that I would love to borrow for my homebrew.

I was a little to quick on the gun and accidentally forgot to to get the print+pdf option. I'm going to have to go back and buy the PDF eventually.

Thank you so much Bruce, for hooking me up with the PDF. This is definitely a lesson in patience and not to give in to hubris as I might not be so lucky in the future.

So I got my book today, and I have to say it is beautiful! My only lament are the dimensions of the book; this could just be an effect of Drivethru PoD service for all I know. Calidar is my first hardcover PoD experience with Drivethru.

Do you think it's too big or too small?

It's fine, just odd. Not the standard dimensions of a hardcover, but it isn't too much of an issue.

Could you define "standard" dimension? I'm very curious to hear your answer. :D

Calidar is 8.75 x 11.25. This seems to be DTRPG's format. In any case, your words were: "My only lament are the dimensions of the book." What's there to be lamenting about if I may ask? ;)

This is the first hardcover PoD I have purchased on drivethru, so I did not know that. I am just a little OCD about my books matching the others on the shelves.

So DTRPG hardbacks are a little taller than "standard" books? Interesting.

I must confess my copy of the hardback is still in my desk drawer so that it's easier to reach than my bookshelves on the other side of the room, inside a big closet. So I've had it for more than six months, but I still haven't put it away on the shelf. ;)

The only other Print on Demand book that I have bought from DriveThru RPG is the Midgard Campaign Setting. (I've linked to a topic about their PoD version being on sale. There is even a nerdy review of the quality of the book...because somebody asked me about the quality of the book. Sadly my photos do not do the quality of the book justice)

That was a softcover book, but I just held it up against my Calidar hardback and the internal parts of the book are identical in size. I've checked it against a D&D softback book and the Midgard softback is slightly larger than the Forgotten Realms softback: Magic of Faerûn.

Both of those books were printed by Lightnight Source UK, rather than imported into the UK. (Page 132 of Calidar: In Stranger Skies has the Lightnight Source details in the bottom left corner, similar to what is in my Midgard book. See the topic I linked to for a picture of that.)

I would be interested to see what it says on the copy you have Thorf. Is there a Lightning Source Japan or did your copy get imported?

How about you Angel? Does yours say Lightning Source USA?

I'm like that with my Spelljammer books. My other books are...mostly...on shelves now, but my Spelljammer books tend to float around the house following me and my laptop.

11.25" x 8.75" is a standard hardcover size. Its normally put together for 'photobooks'. Honestly, since the advent of POD publishing, I think it is probably more 'standard' than 11.1" is now. I don't know how many photobooks for weddings and events I've done that the cover is 11.5"x18+spine" for the wrap that goes onto the cover board.

My wife works for one of the big book companies in the US, I'll pose the question out for her. I know many non-POD books end up in some amazing sizes as well.

My book seems to lie permanently open on my desk. I use it everyday as reference in my endeavor to write CC1 "Beyond the Skies."

Nothing like that....that I see, I may have to inspect it a bit more closely, only gave a rough quick once over.

David, I seem to recall that mine also originated in the UK. But I'll have to check. Lightning Source has printers in the US and the UK, and it was my understanding that most of the international Kickstarter backers were provided by the UK printer. Having said that, most of them were for Europe.

The US version has a note on the blank page in the back, Printed in USA, a barcode, and some other verbiage.
