Chronology of Fan-made Maps

Weird red metals, dominions, immortals, hollow planets, invisible moons, and a lot of glorified magic zeppelins. It's all here.

Chronology of Fan-made Maps

Post by Thorf » Thu May 30, 2019 10:08 am

Has anyone ever made a list of fan-made maps?

And along similar lines, I’m also trying to date the maps. Unfortunately this part is a lot harder, as many people don’t put dates on their maps; some don’t even list their own name, making it hard to even work out who the map is by.

The best I’ve been able to find thus far is the Maps page over at Pandius, which very helpfully includes both the cartographer and the date the map was posted. I’m in the process of converting the data on this page into a list.

Note that several maps published in Threshold magazine are not in that list but are here: http://pandius.com/thrs_mag.html

Hi Thorf
If you need dates from my maps, just send a PM, name the map (or better link it) and ask and I look it up

Hi Thorf, I guess the chronology of posting dates in the page you linked is the best approximation available.

I clearly remember looking for Mystara maps on the Web back in 2000-2001 and most of what was available at that time were the maps of Geoff Gander and Christian Costantin, so I guess the dates in the Vaults are a good reference.

On my side, my first attempts at mapping anything on Mystara are from 2005, not earlier. ;)

Thanks Francesco and Robin. :)

I’m sure there are quite a lot of other maps floating around that also aren’t on that page, or indeed the Vaults. I have quite a few myself on my hard disk, many with names added to the filenames and some with at least the date of download still intact.

Michele, I’m in the same boat as you, as I also started mapping in 2005. :)

The main body of maps missing from the Vaults is surely Thibault Sarlat’s, and since his page disappeared a few years ago I’m not sure there’s any record of them anymore — though I believe I have at least most of them saved.

Some of Thibault's map are also in Tome of Mystara which is not otherwise indexed in the Vaults:

Thanks, Francesco! I had missed those. I spent most of the evening cataloguing Thibault’s maps, with my saved copies but also some that I had neglected to save, which thankfully were captured by the Wayback Machine.

My list has already reached 130 maps, 83 of which are Thibault’s. I’m working through the body of fan-made maps in roughly chronological order, although a lot of maps just lack dates altogether.

If anyone knows of any other sources for maps that aren’t on the Vaults, please post links in this thread. :)

Thorf, you can also peek in my Blog. or deviant art page I have there a page full of many of my maps.
As speaking on Deviantart, several artists already have posted mystara maps;
Ramelin; https://www.deviantart.com/ramelin
Grimklok; https://www.deviantart.com/grimklok/art ... -389601899
Viking1 who placed ALL D&D worlds on 1 planet; https://www.deviantart.com/vikking1/art ... -255651303
Ashtagon; https://www.deviantart.com/ashtagon/art ... -550630380
Knightfall with his world unknown; https://www.deviantart.com/knightfall19 ... -649105857 and https://www.deviantart.com/knightfall19 ... -649108188
Stirvinolady with the Mystara zodiac map; https://www.deviantart.com/stirvinolady ... -568480482 and https://www.deviantart.com/stirvinolady ... -628798164
lurch-jr with the savagecoast https://www.deviantart.com/lurch-jr/art ... -575459995 (although i think this is a copy of your work without personal input of himself)

It seems myself and Ramelin are the largest contributors of Mystara maps on Deviantart.

Thanks for the links, Robin! There are actually lots of maps I've never seen before on your DeviantArt page, even though I thought I found them all last year. :O

Here's a quick update on the status of this mini-project: my list is now up to 230 maps, the vast majority of which date from 1997 until early 2007. I'm working through the Vaults page of maps in roughly chronological order.

I've also added Thibault's maps from the Tome of Mystara at the Vaults (or rather merged their entries with those I already had from Thibault's old site).

And there are quite a lot of maps not listed on the Maps page, but only on the individual author pages (and probably elsewhere too). So I will eventually check through the whole Vaults to make sure I didn't miss anything.

The other sources I have queued up to check out are:

- Threshold featured maps
- DeviantArt profiles for Robin and other cartographers

I think that's all for now. Please let me know if you find any other sources!

Finally, I will probably be contacting individual cartographers to ask some questions to populate my maps table with as much data as possible. To let you know what I probably need in advance, here are the fields I'm recording in my Excel chart:

Map Name
Era (AC 1000, etc.)
Cartographer
Vaults URL
Sources (product codes or other fan cartographers' names)
Year and Month of publication
Region covered
Scale
Software used

And I keep adding (the 6 ethengar maps for example I am currently still working on)

If I do find, I'll place links here no problemo ;)

As to the map information, most is already added.
Cartographer is always me, even though I often use your, canon info, yet the overall work is always mine
not all my maps are on the Vault I believe, some are, and even updated so the last is best
sources are many often and individually variable at each map, so indeed , if you require these ask them of each map individually, ortherwise I become crazyImage
publication date is mostly added to the Deviantart page so reasonably easy to find
region is as per map
scales used are 8 mile hexes, and 1 mile hexes, as per canon and your maps. rare ones without hexes are always having a scale on it
software; hmm probably you find me crazy, but I only use windows paint, I grew acustomed to it and work with easy. on rare occasions (like if needing a freegrade rotation) I use Irfanview (as paint does only 90degree angles), texts I sometimes do in word on a white background, printscreen, adjust in paint(fading, size, background pollution), and then translucent background past in the map. Thats all
so if ya have any questions, ya know i am easy to ask

Are you interested in real world dates or campaign setting dates?

Both. :)

I'm logging the maps in order of creation (real world), but I also want to know their in-game date. In most cases it's easy just to assume AC 1000 if nothing else is listed, but there are exceptions to this.

Robin — thanks for the rundown. I'll be in touch when I get to your maps. :)

One thing I'm not trying very hard to log is updates, because that just introduces an unnecessary level of complexity.

By the way, I'm also largely ignoring my own maps, except where they affect others. This is also for sanity's sake. So for example the only map of mine I've logged so far is Wendar. I may change my mind on this later on, but for now I'm happy to have my own maps represented in the Atlas.

One thing I could do is create a similar table for the Atlas maps, which would act as yet another index to the site. But this is low priority for me.
